Buyer/Purchasing Engineer

Reporting to: Purchase Manager

A proactive, target orientated purchasing professional is required to support commodity purchases from a global supplier base, across a number of group sites. Alongside relevant experience within a fast moving and demanding engineering environment, you’ll be a team player with strong communication, negotiation and organizational skills.

Briefly, the function of this role will be to support new product and design change implementation, through liaison with the supply. Negotiate price supply agreements for new and existing raw materials, components and assemblies. Develop the supply base to ensure quality, cost and delivery targets are achieved.

Main departmental objectives are project delivery and cost reduction.

Functions :

  • To ensure compliance to, and development of purchase policy and procedures in line with company strategy
  • To process internal purchase requisitions from their originator, to placement of order following authorization by the relevant signatories
  • To ensure timely delivery of non-production goods and services, so as not to affect production process efficiency
  • To ensure all goods delivered meet company expectations for H&S and Environmental compliance
  • To obtain, review and challenge quotations for supply of production items, including piece price, tooling/gauge costs and introduction lead-time, and negotiate supply agreements to give best commercial advantage to company
  • To nominate suppliers for production items on the basis of achievement of lowest total acquisition cost and adherence to companies other supplier strategies and requirements, and to re-examine these agreements on a regular basis to ensure competitiveness
  • To use market knowledge and other research to develop top level cost reduction plans for existing suppliers
  • To instigate regular business review meetings with suppliers to address cost down target and supplier performance issue.
  • To place correctly authorized tooling and piece price orders for production items on a timely basis, and to progress same to ensure programme deadlines are met
  • To work with Quality personnel to ensure new and existing suppliers meet company APQP requirements
  • To maintain the correct level of information on the Winman system, to ensure correct budget forecasting and scheduling of production items
  • To notify the Purchase Manager of any potential price movements, and formally record actual price increases and decreases
  • To participate in internal programme review meetings and to develop action plans with suppliers to meet programme need dates
  • To develop a supply base more capable of supporting the company expectations for long term cost reduction, quality and delivery performance and targets for supplier development, and to maintain the Approved Supplier List accordingly.
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Any other reasonable duties as requested by management
  • To travel to various supplier locations in the UK or abroad

 

Standard Qualifications Education, experience, training and skills requirement must be balanced within staff to compliment the departmental need.

 

Education : Minimum 4 O’levels or equivalent including Mathematics and English

Experience : Minimum 2 years buying production parts in automotive environment

Training: As determined by departmental requirements, see individual training records

Skills:

  • Written and verbal communication
  • Able to work under own instruction
  • Well organized
  • Promote cooperation between supplier and company personnel
